Cultures · region shelf 04 of 05

EasternEuropein Ottawa.

Post-war arrivals, the nineties, and then the years after February 2022. The census of May 2021 caught the first two waves and closed before the third, so this shelf carries a stated gap where the other four carry a number.

What the census carries here.

Two of the standard 2021 tables describe most of the city: the racialized-group count and the ten largest birthplaces. This shelf sits outside both of them, and the third line below is the one that matters most to Ottawa right now.

The tableWhat it holds for this regionWhy
Racialized groupsNo lineThe table counts visible-minority groups. European origins fall outside it, so a shelf like this one leaves no trace in it.
Ten largest birthplacesNo country from this regionThe ten are China, India, the United Kingdom, Lebanon, the Philippines, the United States, Haiti, Syria, Viet Nam and Iran.
Arrivals since February 2022Unknown to usThe census ran in May 2021. Everyone who came to Ottawa under the CUAET programme arrived after the count was taken.

Polish, Romanian, Hungarian and Ukrainian Ottawa each go back generations in this city, and the tables the rest of this section leans on describe none of them.

The communities on this shelf.

Eight names to begin with, drawn from the roll-call of communities that already cook in this city and from Ottawa's own record of who has run a festival, a parish hall or a radio hour here. One has a draft; the others are open.

Where the record does show up.

Two pieces of evidence sit outside the census and both are checkable today. They describe a presence in this city that the population tables leave uncounted.

Sourced in each line · our audit of Ottawa's ethnic media and festival calendar, August 2026

  1. Ottawa has carried these languages on air for years

CJLL-FM 97.9, CHIN Ottawa, is the city's commercial ethnic station, and its Ottawa schedule carries Ukrainian and Romanian language blocks among the seventeen it runs.

  2. A multicultural festival named these communities in 1992

Carnival of Cultures, also called Ottawa's International Folkloric Festival, ran three days on Marion Dewar Plaza in front of City Hall from 1992. Its own description names a Polish community among the seventeen it lists.

Where the counting stops.

The size of Ukrainian Ottawa today is the largest single hole in this section, and it is a recent one. Everything about how it gets filled is written below.

This shelf keeps a stated hole in it until somebody fills it with a source. The article for each community here is written with that community, and it stays online long after the tents come down.
